Town of Salem, NH Launches New Website

Town of Salem, NH Launches New Website Engineered by Danconia Media

SALEM, N.H., Aug. 2, 2011 – The Town of Salem has launched an overhauled website designed by Danconia Media, a leading New Hampshire web development and marketing firm.

The site – located at www.townofsalem.org – touts Salem as a place that's full of commerce, industry and recreation. It will be used as an informational hub for town residents as well as a marketing tool for the town. A municipality's web presence can make a big difference in attracting quality companies, which ultimately decreases the tax burden for residents. The site, which went live Monday, features improved aesthetics and functionality over the previous design.

Using the site, visitors can see the town's latest announcements, download important documents and learn about upcoming meetings and events. Each department has its own section on the website that includes a description of its duties, contact information and useful links. Residents can also subscribe to receive email updates about town happenings.

Danconia Media's web developers designed the site using a highly robust, yet user-friendly, content management system (CMS) that the town's staffers can now use to add, remove and modify content in-house rather than relying on a third-party agency. Since the CMS is open-source, it is free of the exorbitant licensing and maintenance fees that proprietary solutions carry.

“I've tried to stress to departments that it's absolutely important for them to add new information and take out old information when they can,” Town Manager Keith Hickey said during a recent Board of Selectmen meeting, according to the Salem, NH Patch. “It's a really good resource.”

Jon Simoni, a Danconia project manager, said the process of collaborating with the town went smoothly. The site will make it easier for residents, town employees and businesspeople to access information more efficiently than ever, he said."

“I'm really glad we could help the Town of Salem,” Simoni said. “This site will be a good thing for the town and especially the residents. The accessibility of government information is vital to any vibrant community.”

NH DHHS Announces Completion of Salem District Officer Merger

Concord, NH – The New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is announcing it will complete the merger of the Salem District Office (DO) with the Southern DO, (located in Nashua), when the Salem DO closes later this week. The consolidation started several months ago when staff from the Division of Children, Youth and Families, Division of Child Support Services, Division of Juvenile Justice Services, and the Bureau of Elderly and Adult Services relocated to the Southern DO. Division of Family Assistance (DFA) staff temporarily remained in Salem. DFA staff are responsible for determining eligibility for assistance programs, including food stamps, cash benefits, and medical benefits.

This merger is the first step in DHHS’ efforts to realign its DO operations. Currently, applying for assistance is done at one of the Department’s District Offices. However, recent technology enhancements to the New Hampshire Electronic Application System (NH EASY), has helped DHHS to expand access to services. The NH EASY pilot program, in place in Salem and Laconia, is allowing people to apply for assistance anywhere they have access to the internet.

“We are in the process of changing the way we do business,” said Deputy Commissioner Mary Ann Cooney. “We believe improvements in technology like this, can help us provide citizens with the services they need without having to visit a District Office. However, we are still making ourselves available in the community, and are working with a local partner to have a DFA staff member work in their office in the Salem area several days a week. As we evaluate the success of this partnership, we could work with other agencies and organizations to do the same.”

DHHS plans to implement the change with NH EASY Statewide in the coming months. The Salem District Office will be open through Friday April 22nd. Anyone in the Salem region who has questions or who may be in need of services can contact the Southern DO at 1-800-852-0632.
