Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday Jesus

It's that time of year again when we all celebrate in our respective ways carrying on our own family traditions.  Coming from an Italian family we have our big feast on Christmas eve preparing seven types of fish.  I've heard many different explanations for this tradition ranging from that it is to remember the seven seas of Italy to the seven burrows of NY city to remembrance that it took God seven days to create the Heaven and Earth.  But the truth is I don't really know why we prepare seven types of fish but never the less it's a fun tradition to carry on.

As time goes on we tend to forget many things and things change.  Christmas is one of those things that has changed over the years and continues to change.  I wrote recently about how Store Christmas displays over the years have faded away.  Sure you can still find some in bigger cities but for the most part they are a thing of the past.  Even the displays around Santa in the malls have become less fun being more about selling products then capturing the eye with amazing displays.

One thing to remember though is why we have Christmas, meals with seven types of fish, displays in the mall with Santa etc.  Christmas is to celebrate the birth of Christ.  It is for this reason why we have displays under our trees with little figures and have pageant in many of our churches.  As I was pondering about the origins of Christmas I stumbled on a thread about Jesus asking if the world today would be as willing to accept him and how he would be treated.  They theorized that he would be crucified today just as he was then but it would be for different reasons...

Leading to my top 10 list for Christmas, the 10 crimes Jesus would be convicted of if he lived today.

1) Practicing medicine without a license.

Matthew 8:7

Jesus said to him, "I will come and heal him."

2) Serving wine without a license.

John 2:3-11

"And when they [Jesus and the disciples? Or all the guests?] wanted wine, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine. "Jesus saith unto her "Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come. His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it. And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece. Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim. And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it. When the ruler of the feast had tasted the water that was made wine, and knew not whence it was: (but the servants which drew the water knew;) the governor of the feast called the bridegroom, And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou has kept the good wine until now. This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him"

3) Illegal gatherings without permits and encouraging flash mobs.

Matthew 23:1

Then Jesus spoke to the crowds and to His disciples,

4) Fishing without a license.

5) Serving food without a permit.

Matthew 15:33-37

The disciples said to him, "Where could we ever get enough bread in this deserted place to satisfy such a crowd?"
Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" "Seven," they replied, "and a few fish."
He ordered the crowd to sit down on the ground.
Then he took the seven loaves and the fish, gave thanks, 14 broke the loaves, and gave them to the disciples, who in turn gave them to the crowds.
They all ate and were satisfied. They picked up the fragments left over--seven baskets full.

6) Vandalism.

Mark 11:15

15On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple area and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts.

7) Environmental violations for driving hogs into the sea.

Luke 8:33

33 And the demons came out from the man and entered into the hogs, and the herd rushed down the steep slope into the lake and was drowned.

8) Animal cruelty charges for the death of the hogs from #7.

9) Teaching without certification.

10) And of course, there would be the biggie... insurance fraud on his life insurance!

Peter 1:3

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead

Merry Christmas!
