Obama's Bait

With the economy in the toilet, unemployment in the double digits, the wars still ongoing in the middle east with no end in sight, GITMO prison still open despite Obama's claims he would close it... there isn't much Democrats can run on in 2010.  They've pushed the blame Bush about as far as it can take them but having controlled the house and senate since 2006 and things only getting worse instead of better there comes a time when people expect results and not just talk.  Scott Brown winning in one of if not the most liberal state in the country is proof positive that we're past that point.

So what are Democrats to do?  Change the focus.  President Obama tossed out a piece of bait that he and his liberal friends are hoping the religious right will snap hold of and make the focus of the 2010 elections.  He's hoping it will offer enough of a distraction that people will continue to ignore the war in Iraq that Democrats capitalized on in 2006 and 2008.  He's hoping that it will offer enough of a distraction that people wont care that one of every ten Americans cannot find work.  He's hopeing that people do not see through his fake attempts at fiscal conservatism while he increases nation wide discretional spending by 17.4% (hmm, sounds like Lynch here in NH with his double digit spending increases).  He's hoping people will ignore the fact that the trillion dollar stimulus accomplished nothing.

What is this bait put out by Obama and company?  Homosexuals in the military.  With same sex marriage already implemented in many states across the country Obama is hoping to focus on homosexual rights in hopes that it creates enough of a distraction that people will ignore everything else that Obama had promised but yet failed to do or has simply just failed at.

"We find unity in our incredible diversity, drawing on the promise enshrined in our Constitution: the notion that we are all created equal, that no matter who you are or what you look like, if you abide by the law you should be protected by it," he said.

"We must continually renew this promise. My administration has a Civil Rights Division that is once again prosecuting civil rights violations and employment discrimination. We finally strengthened our laws to protect against crimes driven by hate," he said.

"This year, I will work with Congress and our military to finally repeal the law that denies gay Americans the right to serve the country they love because of who they are."

If nothing else, Obama is politically smart.  There's a reason he's pulling this out now, in 2010 as the mid-term elections draw near and his party is falling in most polls.

The most recent polls I've seen from 2008 show that 75% of Americans support homosexuals being able to serve in the military.  He's betting that the roughly 25% opposed will object loud enough that he and his party can avoid discussing any real issues.

Personally, I think they are wrong and Americans over all are smart enough to focus on the real issues.
