2nd Chances and Obama

If I were to compile a list of the stupidest things president Obama could have done over this past holiday weekend calling the Eagles to congratulate them for giving dog killer Michael Vick a 2nd chance at a multi-million dollar career would have to be right up there but that's just what Obama felt the need to do.

NBC reports:

Peter King of NBC reported during Football Night in America that President Barack Obama recently called Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie to congratulate the team for giving quarterback Mike Vick a second chance.

President Obama explained that a level playing field rarely exists for prisoners who have completed their sentences.  Vick’s success gives all of them hope.

So while many young talented athletes work hard hoping to get that chance at the big time and perhaps lift them and their families from poverty here's Vick, a punk who had his chance and choose to murder animals and wound up in prison for it.  He had his chance and now he's being given a 2nd chance which takes that opening away from someone else.  Someone most likely far more deserving.

Unlike many lower end jobs, the NFL only has 32 teams.  Each of those teams only has room for about 60 players and many of those don't ever see game play.  Shouldn't we give those chances first to those who earn them not just with their abilities on the field but also by their decorum off the field?  And who's to say that some of those sitting hoping for their chance don't actually turn out to be far better talents?  Let's not forget that Tom Bradey started as a 2nd string backup quarter back who was stocking shelves in the off season and had it not been for Bledsoe's injury in the 2001 season Bradey may never had seen a chance.

Vick wasn't given a 2nd chance at some meager $30,000 a year job teaching football at a college or working with a minor league team.  He was given that 2nd shot at the big time making millions and having his name appear on shirts and jerseys.

And of all the calls to make, of all the 2nd chances given to congratulate for giving and getting, President Obama felt this was the one to make the call about.  Really?  What was he thinking?
