I'm sure by now all of you have seen or at least heard of the hit pieces by the liberal media against the Bachmann family, specifically Michele's husband and the clinic which has been linked to their treatments to "pray away the gay".
Before I get into the main point of this article, I'd like to first have a side discussion about this concept.
The media and liberals are blasting the Bachmann's for this practice and demonizing them for even thinking to attempt this but I ask in return why, what's wrong with it?
The Bachmann's aren't forcing anyone to do anything they don't want to do. In the "sting" shown in the media carried out by Wayne Besen (who I'll address shortly), Wayne walks in to a clinic free of his own will and asks to be treated and asks for help.
I always thought Democrats supported freedom of choice, or does it only count for certain things.
If a woman wants to murder her unborn child, that's a choice Democrats fight to defend.
If a man wishes to cut off his penis and be surgically altered to look like a woman, Democrats defend that too.
From a libertarian point of view if you choose something of your own free will and you aren't harming others in doing it then there is nothing wrong with it nor is there anything wrong to offer help to those seeking it. In fact I would argue it's wrong to prevent people from being able to help those seeking the help in the first place.
Now there is the whole nature made people gay argument but likewise nature made people either men or women and yet there are surgeries to change people's outside appears to be that of the other gender. People fight nature all the time all the way down to little things like fighting baldness. We allow people to have the freedom to do these things so what makes choosing to seek help in being straight over gay any different?
That brings us to the main point of this discussion, Wayne Besen. Wayne is an openly gay man who's a columnist and political activist for gay rights. In order to carry out his "sting" Wayne lied to the members of the clinic, posing as a gay man seeking to change when in fact he was nothing more then an actor looking for a story that would shock the unthinking public and turn them against the Bachmann family.
A few years ago Wayne wrote a column titled "Proud to be Liberal". You can read it in full HERE but I would like to share parts of the column to be considered while thinking of the story I just shared above.
Indeed, the left is the backbone of freedom, the defender of personal liberty, the guarantor of free speech and religious worship and the nurturer of democratic movements across the globe.
Already in just his 2nd paragraph of his column he completely contradicts everything he's claiming is bad in his "sting" by saying people should have personal liberty and freedom of religious worship. Wouldn't someone believing that homosexuality is a sin and wishing to have the personal liberty to seek help from others in changing to be straight be included in that statement above? Once again I guess we have to apply liberal logic where only the freedoms and belief they support apply.
The cornerstone of liberalism is the idea that each person is endowed with the precious gift of liberty and can freely choose his or her own path - for better or worse. We believe this is crucial to greater enlightenment, personal growth, and ultimate fulfillment. It also offers the best opportunity for people to realize their dreams and achieve their spiritual promise.
Freely choose your own path for better or worse? Then why the problem with homosexuals seeking to change?
But it gets better...
Indeed, liberal values are often superior to those held on the right, because they are tenaciously subjected to rigorous examination. Beliefs that are questioned and still prevail are the ones that stand the test of time. Far from moral relativism, liberalism searches for the ultimate value in which to build a moral foundation: Truth.
So why does Blue Hampshire filter any views that disagree with their own or remove links that are 100% factual that go against what they are preaching? Why are liberals the first ones pushing for censorship of the things they dislike (Tipper Gore and the PMRC, remember them?)?
Right wing movements across the globe often seem uninterested in such truth if it contradicts their obdurate belief systems.
Often I find that Liberals push their opinions as facts. I believe that's what Wayne is talking about here. Of course Liberals get bent out of shape if you refuse to accept their opinions as facts or offer contradicting evidence of your own, that's basically you coming off "uninterested" in the "truth".
Another point to make here is how Wayne is coming off just like so many others on the left, claiming superiority.
If the left owns the "truth" and the right wing movement is uninterested in the truth then why lie and pose as someone you aren't in an attempt to create the sting against the Bachmann Clinic?
Modern conservatives are often discomfited by the complexities of life and demand answers to the world's many unanswerable questions. They arrogantly and disingenuously claim to have absolute truth, while liberalism boldly proclaims that it does not have such ubiquitous powers of understanding.
Once again reality shows the opposite to be true. Conservatives sometimes say there are no answers that fix all of life's problems where Liberals present government as the answer to everything. If there's a problem Liberals push a government solution and then ignore any future problems that are created as the result of their government solution.
If Liberals were the ones seeking the truth and willing to confront reality they would be the ones pointing out that the government can no longer continue spending the level it's spending at and be the first to push for change and cuts but they aren't. They are pushing for MORE spending.
Their truth is to claim that they are still fixing the "infrastructure" that Bush let deteriorate but yet they cannot define what the "infrastructure" is and cannot answer why they still haven't been able to fix it even though they've controlled both houses since 2006 and even had the presidency since 2008.
Moving on we get to the crux of his issues with Conservatives:
Conservatives often attack gay rights because they know it is the mark of a free society that abhors authoritarian control. If a country treats gay people with dignity and respect and offers them equality, it signals that the country bases its decisions on sound education, rationalism and science. This inevitably leads towards success in all spheres of life.
While I agree people should be free to explore whatever sexuality they wish assuming they do so with consenting adult partners, the real point of this statement is how he's exposing Liberal hate for America. See how he twists it to insist that unless a country embrace homosexuality they cannot be sound of education, rationalism or science?
If the left wanted sound education, rationalism and science then they should not have stopped the studies on whether or not homosexuality is a mental disorder.
If you are claiming to be the party of the sound education, rationalism and science then even if you accept homosexuality shouldn't you also be willing to question if its a mental disorder or not? Likewise be willing to question if a clinic can cure someone of it if they seek a cure? Seems that would be the exact definition of freedom, liberty and reason to allow people to freely ask such questions and to explore such paths.
Wherever liberal democracy takes root, a strong and proud record of economic, moral, social and political achievement follows.
If by economic he means spending until the country goes bankrupt then I agree but fiscal responsibility as Obama, Lynch and many other democrats have proven is not an accomplishment of the left, fiscal irresponsibility is.
I'm sure a lot of people buy into what Wayne wrote and believe that liberals are the party of truth and liberty but like most liberals Wayne's own actions prove himself wrong.
