What has Carol Shea Porter Acomplished?

A question has come up on a number of forums, including the discussion forum here on NH Insider asking what has Carol Shea Porter has accomplished.  This same question has spilled over to several other smaller scale discussion forums.  It was the Merrimack Forum however that a list of all bills Carol has sponsored and co-sponsored was put up.  She's only sponsored 10 bills but there are several that she co-sponsored. As a chance to pat Carol on the back and bring attention to where all her hard work and our tax dollars that pay her salary are going I would like to share with everyone a list of a couple of the bills she has either put up or co-sponsored.

 1) Supporting the goals and ideals of National Women's Friendship Day.

2) Supporting the goals and ideals highlighted through National Volunteer Week.

3) Supporting the goals and ideals of Professional Social Work Month and World Social Work Day.

4) Supporting the goals and ideas of a National Child Care Worthy Wage Day.

5) Supporting the goals and ideals of Mental Health Month, and for other purposes.

6) Expressing the sense of the Congress that a commemorative postage stamp should be issued to honor our Nation's disabled veterans.

7) Recognizing and honoring York for his role in the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

8) Supporting the goals and ideals of Sickle Cell Disease Awareness Month.

9) Expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that a postage stamp should be issued in commemoration of Diwali, a festival celebrated by people of Indian origin.

10) A resolution expressing the sense of the House of Representatives that the Government of Japan should formally acknowledge, apologize, and accept historical responsibility in a clear and unequivocal manner for its Imperial Armed Forces' coercion of young women into sexual slavery, known to the world as "comfort women", during its colonial and wartime occupation of Asia and the Pacific Islands from the 1930s through the duration of World War II.

Holding Japan accountable for it's actions in the 1930's? Recognizing York for his role in the Lewis and Clark expedition? Clearly our federal government is making full use of it's time and duties and Carol is taking her part in doing so!!!  And as for disabled veteran, my grandfather was one having lost his arm fighting for this country... if you want to do something for men like him a postage stamp isn't it, but alas this could be a full topic in and of itself.

All sarcasm aside, the important thing to look at isn't what bills she put up as I wouldn't mind a rep up put up nothing as long as they vote soundly.  So it is voting records which you can find on www.vote-smart.org that should be considered as true accomplishments.  And what really jumped out at me as Carols real accomplishment was the sea of Yeah's next to nearly every single spending bill listed under "Budget, Spending, and Taxes".  And what's even more telling is after running using the issue of party voting as a key point in getting elected (It is time we elect a Congressional member who will work for the people of NH, and not be a rubber stamp for any administration. - quote taken directly from Carol's own website) is that she has proven herself a hypocrite guilty of the exact same fault she asked us to vote out in 2006.   Here's a fun little trivia question for you, can you name the bill Carol voted for where her viewed differed from Nancy Pelosi and the rest of the Democratic Party?  I'm still trying to find that one myself, maybe I'll devote an article to it once I find out what that bill was.

So to answer all those who continually ask what has Carol accomplished it's quite simple... higher taxes, wasted time in the house and a rubber stamp voting record to the Democratic Party.

What exactly did Bradley do and he was there for 4 years?

Carol is fighting tooth and nail to get services right for our veterns and for people who have been ignored for the last 8 years! Go Carol!

Here is a great video!

Money guy, nice deflection. But to answer your question here is Bradley's voting record:
http://www.vote-smart.org/voting_category.php?can_id=4953

I don't agree 100% with him but it's a lot more appealing then Carols if you ask me.

And as for Carol's fighting tooth and nail for our veterans you'll notice I did point that out by mentioning one of the bills she co-sponsored on that front... putting out a stamp to pay tribute to the disabled veterans (#6 on the list). Wonderful!
What else have you got about her to be proud of?

Mr. Barnes:

You paint a pretty false picture of our Congressperson. As for fighting for our veterans, here is a partial list of the legislation she co-sponsored. There is more.

You may not care about this issue, and think that veterans don't deserve to be helped, but this is a very umportant issue for Carol and she takes it seriously.

H.R.67 : To improve the outreach activities of the Department of Veterans Affairs, and for other purposes.

H.R.333 : To permit retired members of the Armed Forces who have a service-connected disability rated less than 50 percent to receive concurrent payment of both retired pay and veterans' disability compensation,

H.R.446 : To enhance and further research into paralysis and to improve rehabilitation and the quality of life for persons living with paralysis and other physical disabilities, and for other purposes.

H.R.612 : To extend the period of eligibility for health care for combat service in the Persian Gulf War or future hostilities from two years to five years after discharge or release.

H.R.1354 : To improve benefits and services for members of the Armed Forces, veterans of the Global War on Terrorism, and other veterans, to require reports on the effects of the Global War on Terrorism, and for other purposes.

H.R.1448 : To establish a Hospital Quality Report Card Initiative to report on health care quality in Department of Veterans Affairs hospitals.

H.R.1470 : To require the provision of chiropractic care and services to veterans at all Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers.

H.R.2005 : To improve health care for veterans who live in rural areas, and for other purposes.

H.R.2199 : To direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to provide certain improvements in the treatment of individuals with traumatic brain injuries, and for other purposes.

H.R.2219 : To operate a national toll-free suicide prevention telephone hotline targeted to and staffed by veterans of the Armed Forces.

H.R.2239 : To expand eligibility for vocational rehabilitation benefits administered by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs.

H.R.1927 : To repeal the requirement for reduction of survivor annuities by veterans dependency and indemnity compensation, and for other purposes.

In addition to this list, she has co-sponsored another 280 or so pieces of legislation.

As for votes- here are 2 she can be very proud of- raising the minimum wage and increasing the funding for SCHIP.

Mr. Barnes:

Jeb Bradley had a 0 rating from the Disabled American Veterans for his votes last year. That's a zero out of one hundred. He voted against the interests of the men who are fighting and dieing in Iraq and Afghanistan,

AS you said you didn't agree with him on everything, did you agree with him on his votes against our troops?

Our current Senators have a rating of 40 out of 100. Not good, but a lot better than Mr. Bradley.

Richard's very first column was a big lie about Carol Shea Porter so don't expect to get too far with facts.

Thanks for admiting you voted for Bush in 04 in Dave Jarvis column.

Now everything is beginning to make sense.
November 5, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterChaz Proulx
If Jeb Bradley was such a friend to the veterans, why are they struggling so much right now? The GOP had the majority in both the House and Senate and the Presidency. There is no excuse for talking tough but doing nothing for those men and women who have given so much for our country. Carol Shea-Porter has made it her goal to take care of our troops by supporting legislation on TBI, PTSD and the largest increase in the budget for the VA ever. She's also the first one to step up the the plate and call for a full-service VA Hospital in New Hampshire. We're the only state in the country without a full-service hospital and she's the one taking the lead on bringing one back.

Ok, you've successfully argued ONE point she's good at. Anything else to top the rest of the negatives?
November 6, 2007 | Registered CommenterRick Barnes
Yes Chaz, I did vote Bush in '04. I meet Kerry and got to know a lot about him since my wife campaigned for him (and went on national TV with him). He was slime. Bush sucks but Kerry was far worse.

And for the record I did vote against Bush in the '04 primary. And if you'd like more of my voting record, I voted for Gore in 2000. Before that I voted 3rd party in '96. So what exactly do you think that proves????
November 6, 2007 | Registered CommenterRick Barnes
Hmmm... Mike, I looked up a bunch of those bills on Govtrack.us and most were never even voted on much less passed into law.

HR 66 I think was the only one passed of what I've looked up so far and it passed with only 11 votes against it and they were mixed between both parties.

So putting up bills that weren't even brought up to a vote isn't exactly something I'd consider an accomplishment... so I withdraw my prior statement about finding ONE... what else have you got?

Richard.

Your vote for Bush in 04 is a perfect barometer of your judgement.
November 6, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterChaz Proulx
Mr. Barnes:

As an avid student of the federal legislative process, no doubt you know that a bill is "alive" for the entire 2 year session of a Congress, so the fact that it has not been passed so far is not particularly telling. There are 14 months to go.

I still think CSP's record regarding veteran issues vs. Bradley's "zero" rating in 2006 by the Disabled American Veterans is worth a comment by you. Do you find Bradley's rating troubling?
November 6, 2007 | Unregistered CommenterMike Emm
Mike, I'm not sure where you get your information but clearly it isn't meshing with what I found when I looked it up.

Regarding Bradley:
2006 Bradley supported the interests of the Disabled American Veterans 66 percent in 2006.
Source www.vote-smart.org which in turn links to www.dav.org as it's source.
http://www.vote-smart.org/issue_rating_detail.php?r_id=3483

Carol in turn has not been in long enough to merit a rating but I will be watching to see how she does.

And based on the fact he scored 66%, I do find that somewhat troubling as I would have liked to see him score slightly better but I don't find it THAT troubling.

Richard:

You can not debate tinfoil hats.

But it is nice to know that bill to make Japan apologize for comfort women is on the top of the list of what North Korea wants.

Mr. Barenes:

You are correct. Mr. Bradley got a DAV rating of 0 percent in 2005 and 2004, not 2006. Since 2006 was an election year, it stood to reason that his support would increase. Thanks for pointing that out.

Ratings come out at the end of the year, so there are no ratings for 2007 yet, but Carol will score very high.

Richard

I hope you noticed that Mike was willing to correct an error. I have never once seen you concede even a minor point.

I would place that error in the "distinction with out a difference" category.

Bradley's record on vets overall was terrible. In an election year it got better all of a sudden.

Carol on the other hand came out of the gate righting the wrongs against our vets. She wasn't guided by election year politics. She did exactly what she said she would do.

Bradley and Bush not only let vets in general down, they abandoned the interests of wounded vets coming home from Iraq.

What hypocricy that was.

Mr. Ed

Get a life. Mike Emm writes the most serious comments at this web site.

"I have never once seen you concede even a minor point." - Chaz

Then you clearly aren't looking because I did correct myself just the other day.

"Carol on the other hand came out of the gate righting the wrongs against our vets." - Chaz

As I said Chaz, I will mark that one up for Carol. So we have her voting yes on nearly every spending vote, rank and file along Nancy voting something like 98% in line with democrats even though she campaigned saying those who vote lock step should be tossed out, she's wasted countless government hours and dollars on foolish bills like the Lewis and Clark BS... but like a broke clock she's right at least twice a day because she's clearly on the right side when it comes to supporting our vets. At least she's done SOMETHING good.

Are you aware that CSP helped discover billions of wasted dollars in the college loan scams?

She then sponsored legislation that expands Pell Grants. The whole thing was done under the Democratic philosophy of pay go.

There are many more examples but I'll write about them in my column when I have time.

Congresswoman Shea-Porter Helps to Secure Funding Support for Construction Projects in NH

Carol Shea-Porter helped to secure $10.1 million in funding support construction projects at the Pease Air National Guard Base and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard as part of a bill passed by the House on Tuesday. The funding was included in an appropriations bill providing funds for veterans' health care, military construction, and a range of domestic programs including home heating oil, school funding, and worker safety.

"I'm very pleased that I was able to help secure this funding. These are important projects that will help bring good-paying jobs to New Hampshire," said Congresswoman Shea-Porter. "Pease Air National Guard Base and the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard are not only important to our local community, they are also valuable strategic assets to our national security."
The bill provides funding for two projects requested by Shea-Porter. It includes $8.9 million to support the construction of the Wing Headquarters Operations and Training facility at the Pease Air National Guard Base. It also includes $1.2 million to help fund critical renovations at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard that will enable the facility to repair and maintain the next generation of attack submarines.

"Are you aware that CSP helped discover e's very good at billions of wasted dollars in the college loan scams?" - Chaz

Chaz, she in turn has also WASTED billions of tax dollars supporting bills loaded with more pork the KC's Rib Shack.

Here's an article pointing out several examples.
http://www.unionleader.com/article.aspx?headline=The+pork+twins%3A+Hodes%2C+Shea-Porter+love+earmarks&articleId=7b928df7-7749-4c14-a333-7e8069b0cfc2

And let's not forget my favorite example HR 2641 the bill that gave $1 million to a group that didn't even exist!
http://www.nhinsider.com/richard-barnes/follow-the-money-to-federal-coruption.html
Carol (and Hodes both) had no problem voting for it even though the person who put up the bill admitted he didn't know if the group receiving the one million was real or not.

I'm sure you can site a number of bills she's backed that have potential of being good bills but are instead laden with earmarked pork spending when you actually take the time to look closely at them... sadly though you don't. Chaz, I strongly suggest you actually READ the bills you are touting because I'm sure there is more then meets the eye with them. And if you wish to toot her horn, then you may want to be honest and list the bill number rather then just quote her empty comments so people can actually see for themselves the full truth. Of course then you wont be able to paint her as the hero you wish to make her out to be.
