With human nature being what it is, we should not be surprised at the hypocrisy of our own government.  These charlatans claim moral high ground over capitalists and bankers while taking their money and buying each other off with ours.

They do nothing that does not first increase their own power and importance.

Their legislation creates more problems than it solves.  Bad ideas are made overly complex to the point of impotence because they have had to barter away their better judgment for the appearance of action.  The resolution, in the end, is to make their central government its master—whatever “it” is—and to work out the details later.

And no institution is without taint.  The only thing settled about science is that it has devolved into a cadre of shamans casting bones upon the earth whose prophesy is more about their own power and influence, and always about more taxpayer dollars to fund them.

Public Education is equally corrupt; a ship steered by national unions whose foremost interest is in higher salaries at the expense of all else.  They then can collect more dues money for the next contract battle--even higher salaries, from towns and municipalities often ill equipped to fight them.  And we are never allowed to question the cost or compare it to the results.  But whatever the results, the only possible answer is more money.

So as we enter into 2010 consider, if you will, the greater problem.  Government is corrupt.  Science is corrupt.  Education is corrupt.  Even religion is corrupt.  Not because the institutions themselves are at fault, but because imperfect beings—us—have been charged with their husbandry, and we have repeatedly proven ourselves to be miserable selfish masters.

Ask yourself, for all my weaknesses, and the weaknesses of mankind, if I am to shoulder the burden of government, of education, and even of science, where best to place the nexus of such authorities so that I and my brethren may administer to it more efficiently?

The answer is always “as close to you as possible.”

Our founders, whatever their personal flaws, understood this and created a constitution to defend us from ourselves.  So if you make no other resolution this year, resolve to understand the risk we present to our own freedom so that you might defend it, not just from your government, but from our selves.
