Arizona Maybe?

Unemployed, like the dry heat? Heard of the movie Starman?  Maybe you want to get John McCain out of the Senate? Pay attention.  Arizona just passed anti illegal immigration legislation so things could get interesting.  The bill allows the police to arrest illegals, eliminates sanctuary cities, and allows citizens who believe the law is being ignored to sue their municipalities.  It's the toughest law of its kind in the country.  It enforces the immigration law by putting the ill back in illegal.  So what are the ramifications? (No not the whiny liberal, Boo-hoo Hampshire "you can't do that you racist" ramifications, the actual socio-economic shifts.)

We can't get into all of them, like changes in crime or the burdens on public services, but I happen to have a friend who lives in Arizona and I asked him about the law.  He said that if passed it could damage the state economy.  Why?  To keep it simple, according to him, there are plenty of workers and consumers in Arizona who would be encouraged to leave, or based on the new law be removed from the US employment/consumer relationship, and eventually escorted out of the country.  And while the illegals do send a good deal of money back over the border, they spend a lot of that money on the local economy.  Depending on how quickly the enforcement is carried out, he believes it could have an impact on much of the legitimate business that takes place.  Oh yeah, and I guess there are loads of jobs Americans really won't do in Arizona.

It sounded a bit dramatic but the source is reliable.  If he thinks it can pose a problem I believe him.  But I still think that Arizona should proceed.  Illegal is illegal.  And if this discourages more illegal entrants or encourages people to get legal, that's a good thing.

Given the brashness of the illegal community I have to wonder if we can even expect an exodus in the wake of the signing.   Law enforcement, for their part,  will have to work their way systematically through the process, starting with the most obvious and least socially beneficial border thieves they encounter  Then there will be lawsuits, challenges, and the obstructionist anti-states rights Obama administration.  Rumor has it congress is ready to drop everything to push through amnesty legislation, so there is that to contend with.  And the liberals will be squawking so Arizona will have to fight off the noise from the declining career of George Lopez (among others) who used to be funny but has converted a successful career into a bad late night show and a declining path to obscurity with no Air America to fall back on.

So while the illegal population moves over to New Mexico, California, and Texas, let's get back to my opening question.  Unemployed?  Need a job?  Looking for a change?  Arizona Maybe?

I think they'll be hiring?

Are you serious? Would you want a law like Arizona just passed in New Hampshire? Is THAT what we want America -- home of the free and the brave, a beacon of liberty -- to become? Is THAT what our United States Constitution is all about? Is THAT the image we want, the country about which the Declaration Of Independence is written? Is THAT what we think about when we cite the Pledge Of Allegiance? Is THAT what Americans of all kinds -- young and old, gay and straight, men and women, of many religions and nationalities -- have fought in wars to protect? Is THAT what our Star Spangle Banner is about? Is THAT what Jesus would do?

We need immigration reform to create a better process, and Congress needs to continue to act on that. We don't need a knee-jerk political reaction that finds more ways to punish families and human beings who don't seem to look "American" enough. The Arizona law will cause neighbor to call police on neighbor and people to be suspicious of one another, until one "proves" he or she belongs. Crazy stuff.

Jim,

Can't help but wonder "What part of ILLEGAL are you having issues with?"

and don't kid yourself this already exists everywhere in the USA. Profiling is a normal Law Enforcement mode of operation!

Two cars are driving through Anytown USA at 2am, one has an older looking couple, clean newer car. The other car has 2 "young" looking folks with baseball caps on backward, car is a bit older.

Which car gets stopped?
Once stopped what is the first thing the Police Officer will ask for?

Work Hard Have Fun!

Bob, then from your assessment of current "profiling," I suppose you're agreeing with me that this horrible new, divisive "law" ain't at all needed. Thank you for your support for equality, the United States Constitution, liberty, and fairness in the way we treat people.

By the way, how will Arizona now treat "visitors" and "tourists" who happen not to be American citizens, and don't look like "one of us?" Crazy stuff indeed.

So if you agree with me that profiling is already happening even right here in NH where you obviously agree to profiling as you haven't made it illegal for the police.

Though it makes one wonder how a police officer could do their job without using some sort of filtering process to weed out the potential suspects.

So asking for "Papers" such as license and registration is OK right. When the person doesn't or can't provide a valid license or registration, Arizona has now made it legal for the officer to then ask for Immigration paperwork, such as Visa, Passport, Green Card, etc. What exactly is wrong with that?

When I was working in Switzerland, staying in France and visiting Italy regularly they asked for my papers every time I crossed a border! Never failed! I was never stopped by a police officer but one would assume they would be asking for the same type papers. Perhaps this is why the company I worked for at the time "taught" us to carry important papers with us at all times!

I assume you want open borders with Mexico but will they offer reciprocal open borders for all Americans? Until they do we should have a Mexican Border policy that matches Mexico's! It takes 2 countries to have a Border!

We have a problem here in northern NH with the Quebecois. They are coming down to our state to buy cheap stuff in our stores like cigarettes and booze and the feds can't seem to stop 'em. We need to pass a law requiring local police to stop anyone who looks like they may be Quebecois and demand to see either a passport or a birth certificate. That would solve our problem toute suite. It should be easy to tell the Quebecois. They all have white skin so the police need to focus on whites.

Now NH caucasians may be a little worried because they might be targeted by this law. They will simply have to go around with a passport, a birth certificate, or both in the unlikely event that a policeman makes a mistake and thinks they are a Canadian. If you can't remember to carry proper papers, I am told that a night in the county lockup does wonders to improve one's memory. Surely this little inconvenience is a small price to pay to make our border safe, n'est-ce pas? After all, you can't make an omelette without cracking a few eggs.

Anuther librel idjit,

To find the Canadians who may be here illegally I assume you would use some of the same profiling techniques as for any other ethnicity ..

Are they hanging out at Home Depot/Lowes early every morning, are they overly dependent on Work a Day situations, are they staying in houses way over populated for the infrastructure? Did they produce a SSN to get a job? is it a valid SSN and is it their SSN?

You cry that the pay for some jobs is so low, then you openly support the abuse of desperate people! Farm workers wages are so low because ILLEGALS will do it for that rate with no benefits etc!!!

I think we are 100% in agreement that the root cause of the illegal immigration situation is the desire on the part of foreigners to work in the US at wages that are better than they can get in Mexico (or peut-etre Quebec). US businesses could fill these job with legal US workers, but the fact is they'd have to pay them a lot more than they can get an illegal to work for. If you really want to get rid of illegal immigrants, make it a felony to employ one and back that up with meaningful penalties including loss of the business or possible jail time. You'd see the jobs get taken from the illegals, and when they are unable to work in the US they would head home. The jobs they would give up would be taken by Americans at significantly higher salaries. You can't get an American to pick fruit at $4 an hour. The clear implication is that the cost of living would go up and our unemployment rate would go down.

Business won't like it, but would it be worth it? You bet.

"You'd see the jobs get taken from the illegals, and when they are unable to work in the US they would head home."liberal idiot, but I repeat myself.

Bullshit! They won't leave until we stop giving them free stuff, like healthcare, housing ,education,,food, etc:,and you know it.We also need to stop granting citizenship to people just because they are born here.THAT is how you bring illegal immigration under control. And,in the interest of bi-partisanship,lets make it a felony for employers to hire illegals.

Where was all this concern for freedom and liberty when your comrades in our government voted to make me a slave to the insurance industry?Where was your concern for those of us who don't believe in being FORCED to buy insurance?
It's perfectly fine for you socialists to require your fellow American citizens to carry "paperwork"(proof of insurance),but listen to the squeeling when your fellow Americans(Arizonans)require paperwork to prove said persons eligibility to be in their State, not to mention country.

God,you people are pathetic.Hypocrisy does'nt begin to describe it.If the American people don't wake up and kick you freaks out of office this November,we will deserve whatever is coming our way.
