So I'm in Lewiston, Maine getting ready to watch the $2,000,000.00 purse 2012 Kentucky Derby.
Lewiston, Maine isn't actually the horse capital of New England yet from northern New Hampshire it is the closest parimutuel betting facility that is available.
The Lodge at Belmont no longer offers parimutuel wagering thus leaving Seabrook Greyhound Park or Rockingham Park in Salem. So this place is called Winner's Circle OTB and it's located right in the city which I think resembles the old brick buildings of Manchester, N.H. with the new wave of industrial skyline like Denver has but with no mountains. There's also a fairly impressive waterfall that dissects the city very similar to Manchester but more noticeable. So that's Lewiston, Maine.
In any case the favorites here are #6 Bodemeister at 9-2 #15 Gemologist at 6-1 and #4 Union Rags at 5-1 lots of the horses in this field actually have odds of 15-1 to 30-1!!!!
Can anyone say entry fees.
Its still pretty exciting here though.
This facility according to pictures on the wall was actually a former horse barn at the Lewiston Racetrack which was constructed in the 1800s which by the 1990s had no place in a NASCAR, Cable Television watching society. So, the track was demolished, subdivided, sold and this small barn is all that remains.
History pushed aside for progress. So it goes.
It's a nice facility though widescreen televisions across two wall with tracks all over the United States. They have betting stations and mutuals windows (3); they actually reserve tables for individuals that call ahead on this day everything is completely reserved, I'm actually standing near the foyer by the main entrance that is all that there is.
